Summer Style
It can be tough navigating all the constant store updates and emails urging you to buy the latest summer trends. Trust me—as a stylist, I get hundreds of emails from brands every day! If figuring out what to buy feels overwhelming, I’m here to help.
Here are a few simple ways to update your summer look—no full wardrobe overhaul required.
1. Reassess your shorts situation. How’s the fit of your current favorites? Are they feeling a bit dated, tight, or faded? For summer, I like to have three go-to styles: a polished pair for dressier moments, an everyday casual pair, and a breezy cotton poplin short to throw over swimsuits. It’s also a great time to experiment with new lengths—like a sleek Bermuda or even a playful culotte. A denim short update can be a low-lift way to tap into a new trend.
2. Sunnies! -
Update your sunglasses! This is the easiest way to look on trend and fresh. Try smaller oval, oversized, square, or tinted lenses for a fresh cool look.
3. Hats -
This is mandatory, during the summer months. The sun is strong and we need to protect our skin and look stylish. I’ve been loving the oversized brim straw hats flipped up, gives it a retro feel. Straw hats that offer an UPF are worth it. A few of my favorites are Lack of Color, Eric Javits, and Janessa Leone.
4. Refresh your bag game.
Swap out heavy leather totes for lighter textures like canvas, straw, or raffia. A structured woven bag instantly adds a chic, vacation-ready vibe to any outfit—even if you’re just heading to brunch.
Think about function too: a hands-free crossbody for day trips, a sleek mini bag for nights out, or a roomy tote for pool days. A bag update is a simple way to breathe new life into your basics without overthinking your outfit.
5. Elevate your swim game.
Summer is the perfect time to upgrade your swimwear—especially if you’re still holding onto styles that have lost their shape or feel a little tired. Look for suits with clean lines, supportive structure, and colors that complement your skin tone. One-piece styles with modern cutouts or a square neckline can feel both flattering and fashion-forward.
6. Coverups! A great coverup can take you from beach to lunch without skipping a beat. Instead of defaulting to an old oversized tee, try a breezy cotton shirtdress, a gauzy caftan, or a matching linen set that feels elevated and intentional.
